Chapter Twenty-Five
“I asked you a question!” the guy says again, after just a couple of seconds, before taking a knife from his pocket. “What the hell are you people doing in here?”
“Easy,” Stephen says, holding his hands up. “We don't want any trouble!”
“You're not...”
The guy stares at him for a moment, before turning to me. At the same time, he slowly lowers the knife, as if he's staring to recognize that we're not really much of a threat.
“You're not infected,” he continues finally. “Are you looters? Is that it?”
“Infected?” I reply, struck by a sudden fear that he's going to start parroting a load of rubbish about zombies. “What -”
“What are you doing up here?” he asks, interrupting me as he removes his goggles. He's younger than I thought, about my age. “Wait, let me guess. You thought the cold temperatures would freeze them, didn't you?” He hesitates, and then he sighs again. “Join the club, except it's not true. It's like they've got anti-freeze in their veins. There are at least a few of them in the area, although lately they haven't been troubling the town too much.”
He hurries past me and goes behind the counter, and then he pulls out a bottle of whiskey. Without stopping to ask whether we'd like some, he takes a big swig. He seems manic, frazzled, almost incapable of standing still.
“Hopefully,” he adds with a gasp, wiping whiskey from his chin, “the blizzard'll wipe them out for good. Or at least it'll bury them so deep, they'll never be able to get free.”
“So what you're saying,” Stephen says cautiously, “is that you've seen zombies around here.”
He glances at me, as if he expects me to finally give in and tell him that I believe all this nonsense.
“Seen them,” the man mutters between more swigs of whiskey, “run from them, killed them. Watched them kill my friends and family. Watched my friends and family become them. You name it.”
Stephen's still looking at me, and I can tell that he thinks this is the moment when I'm finally going to break. The trouble for him is that I'm still not at that point.
Not yet.
“So these zombies attacked the town, huh?” Stephen continues.
“It was crazy,” the man says. “A bunch of people left as soon as the news from down south got out, but about half the population stayed. I guess we thought we'd be safe up here, but that's not how it worked out. I don't even know how the first case got here, although it must have been someone who'd been south to one of the towns. When it happened, it happened so fast. A few people got away, but a lot died.” He takes yet another swig. “My parents were killed. Then I had to kill them again. Turns out, fire stops the zombies. Then I was the only one left, and... Well, I just couldn't bring myself to abandon the entire town. I guess I got sentimental. Besides, where was I supposed to go? So here I am.
